The 2010 East African Regional Forum took place in Kampala, Uganda from 11 to 15 October 2010 and involved 19 teams from Rwanda, Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda as well as many participant observers from various organisations.
The topics for the Forum were chosen by PATA teams and the programme was designed by the PATA academic committee.
The first day was dedicated to 'Advanced ARV therapy' and included a plenary session on toxicity problems with 'fragile regimens', the new PMTCT guidelines, TB in HIV infected children, infant and young child feeding and a look at a variety of case studies.
The second theme was 'Adolescent Care ' which looked at current trends, sexual and reproductive health, peer support and examples of best practice in adolescent care as well as examples of key counselling skills that can be used with adolescent children.
On the third day of the Forum, PATA teams discussed their various experiences with disclosure to children and their clinic protocols. In addition guest speakers discussed the issues around ethics and rights when it comes to disclosure, counselling and the communication skills needed for disclosure. A PATA expert patient also shared her own experience with disclosure to her child.
Many teams did a short presentation in the PATA Speakers' Corner in order to discuss their successes and challenges.
This participatory action-oriented Forum, was held in partnership with Uganda Paediatric Association (UPA), The AIDS Support Organisation (TASO) and Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC). It provided teams with opportunities to network and share experience with others, to receive technical updates/presentations on topics directly relevant to their everyday work and set goals for the following year
